Civil Engineering Innovations are often Patent Eligible. Although most civil engineers do not see themselves as inventors, many develop innovations that warrant patent protection. Not surprisingly, the patent laws afford protection to civil engineering products and materials. Patent protection, though, goes further, covering civil engineering methods. Construction and rehabilitation methods also generally qualify as patent eligible. This website attempts to lay out how much potential exists for developing the intersection between civil engineering and patent law. One of the most important notions that a reader might take away from this website is that civil engineers possess the same capacity to innovate as their colleagues in more heavily patented industries. Civil engineers just need to realize this, and use the patent system for the purpose envisioned by the American founding fathers: To Promote Progress.
